How to Replace the Key on a Saab 9-5
- 1). Determine which key you have. Saab 9-5s used four types of keys during the first generation, which was built from the 1998 to 2009 model years. All keys are interchangeable, with the exception of an all-in-one remote control used from the 2004 model year forward. The dealership parts department can help you find the right key.
- 2). Purchase a key. The key and remote are one single piece on all Saab 9-5 models. You can purchase one from the dealership or an online site like eBay or Craigslist.
- 3). Have the key cut. A Saab dealership must look up your key code by Vehicle Identification Number. You can give this information to the dealership, and you may also be required to show proof of ownership before the dealership will cut the key.
- 4). Pair the key to the car. A new Saab 9-5 key must be paired to the car with a Tech 2 tool, a specialized device used by General Motors technicians. If the 9-5 key is not properly paired to the car, the vehicle will not start and you could be stranded.
