How to Develop Profiles Cut on an Angle

    • 1). Measure the piece of molding that you will be making the profile cut on with a tape measure. Mark the desired cut location with a pencil. Slide the piece of molding into a miter saw. Push it up firmly against the fence on the back of the saw.

    • 2). Pull the knob on the front of the saw and turn the blade of the saw to the desired angle measurement. Line up the blade of the saw with the mark on the molding. Turn on the saw and pull down on the lever. Bring the blade of the saw straight through the molding.

    • 3). Sand down the end of the molding where you made the miter cut with fine-grade sandpaper. Move the sandpaper over the entire edge until it is smooth and even throughout.

    • 4). Mark the edges and curves along the mitered edge of the crown molding you just cut with a pencil. Lay the molding down on a table and tighten it down in place with a C-clamp so it does not move when you are cutting the profile.

    • 5). Cut along the pencil line with a coping saw. Move the saw back and forth following the contours of the profile, keeping the blade 1/16-inch to the waste side of the cut line. Continue until the profile has been cut out and then sand it down with a file to get a smooth, even profile.
