What is the Function of the Marines?
- The Marines are known as the first line of defense --- "America's 911 Force" because their versatile capabilities over diverse terrain allow them to fight overseas. Marine expeditionary units (MEUs) are the smallest Marine unit that can be deployed, and can plan and mobilize a mission in only six hours.
- The Marine Corps often works closely with the U.S. Navy to provide coverage over air, ground and sea. The Marine Corps uses much of the same training, transportation and equipment as the Navy, and thus are effective in attacking from the sea onto land. This approach, called amphibious warfare, has proven extremely effective since its founding in 1775, as the Marines have served in every armed conflict in the history of the United States.
- Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) describes the distinctive four-part structure of Marine Corps operations which combine aviation, ground, and logistical teams under a command unit. Each component is responsible for carrying out offensive, defensive and reconnaissance strategies in their respective areas. MAGTF is flexible and efficient, allowing for each mission to be custom-tailored to suit its purpose.
