How to Visit Makanda, Illinois

    • 1). Start in Carbondale, the home of Southern Illinois University. Drive about 5 miles south along Illinois 51 to the sign for Makanda to the left. The bright yellow water tower complete with a smiley face and bow tie will mark the road, as well as the green direction sign.

    • 2). Slow down. After making the left turn from the state highway to the road back into Makanda, many drivers are not expecting the hills and sharp curves that lead back to the community. If you come in the fall, keep your eyes open for the local wildlife, especially the circling turkey vultures.

    • 3). Find a place to park. If you didn't come during the festivals, parking is available along the Boardwalk. During the festivals, the best parking is along the railroad tracks that run through downtown.

    • 4). Visit the sculpture garden at the south end of the Boardwalk as a nice place to start your tour. From there, wander through the small shops and art galleries. Be sure to stop at the candle shop and see what new colors and designs are available this year. The shop also features tie-dyed T-shirts and a variety of scented candles and incense.

    • 5). Jump back in the car and continue northwest to Giant City State Park. There are several great hiking trails, interesting rock formations and the Giant City Lodge. At the lodge, stop by in the lobby to say hello to the two stuffed bison, retired from a local farm. Enjoy the family-style fried chicken dinner or try out the bison burgers from local Bison Bluff Farm.
