Tuscan Wall Colors

    Terracotta

    • The word "terracotta" is Italian meaning baked clay, and the color derives from the earth. It is the most common of the Tuscan colors both in the "fired" or glazed form and in its matte finish. Terracotta has many hues, with either yellow or red overtones. The more muted the terracotta, the more true to Tuscany the color is. Clay tile roofs, plaster walls and terracotta pottery dominate the Tuscan home. Texturing techniques are frequently used in newer homes to recreate a feeling of age. The color is added to the plaster before painting and, once applied, the terracotta walls appear as ancient as Italy.

    Greens

    • Olive green and celadon are two popular Tuscan colors. The land of Tuscany is verdant, and its green derives from the grape vines, olive harvest and lemon tree leaves. This is not a bright green but a hue that blends without making a statement. The muted green is a backdrop to the furnishings placed in front of it.

    Gold

    • A rich, muted gold, without the shine, works well on walls as it blends with all Tuscan colors. Faux painting with rags or sponges gives texture to the color and recreates an ancient theme. Gold is warm, inviting and an unobtrusive color. Furnishings and decorative objects display well against a muted gold Tuscan wall.

    Sky Blue

    • The Tuscan sky is soft and gentle, not glaringly bright. Tuscan blue is more often used as a trim than for an entire wall, but using a light hue of the color will create an inviting, serene atmosphere in any room. The blue of a crocus makes a stronger statement yet still evokes Tuscany.

    Reds

    • Reds, from deep crimson to burnt sienna, are found throughout Tuscan decor. A statement wall can be painted a rich wine color and fronted with a dark-wood Italian table. Mute the red, or go for a lighter tone, to create a weathered wall. Don't be afraid of red. It's one of the most dynamic of wall colors and adds depth and warmth to all rooms.
