Sunflowers thrive in full sun and well-drained sandy soils. There are many species that range in size. Some sunflowers only grow a few inches while others can grow up to 12 feet tall. Some varieties face forward while the flower head in other species tilts to get the most sun available. The flower head itself even reminds some people of the sun. The center is large and brown and the petals are bright yellow to orange and very soft. The foliage is dark green and stems are thick and sturdy. - The Arizona poppy grows wild in Arizona.Wild California Poppies image by Richard Haworth from Fotolia.com
