Symptoms of Bone Spurs

    Pain

    • The most frequent symptom of a bone spur is mild to severe pain. This is largely due to the pressure or irritation that the growth is prompting to nearby tissue.

    Immobility

    • When a bone spur is located near a joint, it can create some problems with mobility, in that an elbow or a knee may become somewhat limited in its movement.

    Numbness

    • Depending on where the bone spur is located, it may begin to place a certain amount of pressure on a nerve, which could elicit some numbness to that extremity.

    Swelling

    • While not necessarily a common symptom, a person with a bone spur may begin to notice some swelling in the affected area. This is a consequence of the spur essentially creating some deterioration in a tendon or a muscle on which it has been rubbing against.

    Swallowing

    • If you develop a spur on the spine near your throat, it may create some pressure that could result in some trouble when swallowing. This is not as common as pain, immobility and numbness.
