How to check for head lice.
The only truly effective way to check for head lice in the hair of anyone is by very careful visual inspection.
It should also be noted that eyebrows and eyelashes as they are hair, are sometimes infected too.
Short hair is for obvious reasons much easier to work with but even with very long hair it is simply a case of methodical searching this way: * Get into a good light source like a window, under a bright light or use a spot lamp.
You need to be able to see the critters.
* Visually inspect the hair around and behind the ears and the nape of the neck as these are places they will lurk.
Don't forget to check eyebrows and lashes.
* Use a proper head lice comb.
Ordinary combs are of little use because their teeth are too wide apart and will allow lice and nits to slip through.
* The adult and young will look similar to tiny brown or gray poppy seeds in the hair.
The adults are easier to spot as they move and will be darker than their eggs (nits) which will be pale / clear.
* Head lice live close to the scalp which they bite to suck blood in order to live.
Although they do not venture far you must check ALL the hair for strays because if you miss any they will just continue the infestation.
* Methodically comb small sections of hair looking closely as you go.
The nits will be glued to hair shafts close to the scalp and hard to spot due to their colour.
Thorough combing every bit of hair several times should pull most of them off.
However you might miss some and repeated, thorough daily combing for a couple of weeks should eliminate them all.
Vigilance is the watchword if you want to keep your child lice free.
There are a lot of myths about head lice and the reality is they will target any person's hair; young or old clean or dirty long or short, it makes no difference to them.
No matter how many times you eliminated them from your child's hair the minute ( and that is about all the contact required ) your youngster in within touching distance of someone infected, it all begins again.
