How to Make Vellum Envelopes
- 1). Unfold an ordinary envelope that you would like to replicate. Envelopes come in a variety of styles and folds so you should find one that you like and suits your style. You will use this envelope as a template for your vellum envelopes. To be sure that you do not tear the template envelope you can use steam to loosen the glue adhesive and lift the edges. This will make it easier to unfold and lie flat but is not necessary if you feel you can unfold the template envelope without assistance.
- 2). Trace the edges of the template envelope onto the vellum. Make the trace marks lightly with pencil. Do not press hard because you could tear the paper or leave marks on the finished envelope. You also can make light marks where the fold lines will be.
- 3). Cut out the vellum envelopes following the pencil tracings. You can do this individually and in small groups, depending on what your scissors can handle. If you have a paper cutter you will be able to cut thicker stacks at a time, as well as being guaranteed to get straight cuts.
- 4). Fold the envelopes to the final shape. You will fold them the same way the template envelope was folded. You can choose to mark the fold lines on the vellum by tracing the folds from the template. If you choose this option, you should know that those lines will be present in the finished envelope because you cannot erase the lines. Another option is to fold the envelope along with the template and not use markings.
- 5). Apply a thin layer of vellum adhesive or glue around the edges of the vellum envelope. Follow where your template envelope was glued. Each design will have different areas of glue application. Do not apply the adhesive to the envelope flaps until you have inserted the invitation and are ready to mail the envelopes. After you apply the adhesive or glue, you will want to let it dry before trying to insert the invitation. If you apply too much glue, it can seep out and ruin the envelope by gluing the edges to the inside. If this happens, you will have to start over because you will not be able to get anything into the envelope.
