How to Write GECA Essays
- 1). Fulfill the essay requirements without deviating from the expected format. The GECA essay instructions specifically state that the admission essay must be typewritten, no longer than two pages in length, and composed using the Times New Roman 12-point font with the page margins set to 1 inch on all sides.
- 2). Satisfy the content requirements for the essay. Your GECA admissions essay must provide biographical information and answer the following questions: What academic goals will GECA help you achieve that a regular high school or other preparatory school will not? What qualities of your character will ensure that you can satisfy the requirements of GECA's "honor code"?
- 3). Tell a narrative as you answer the required questions. A good story will engage the reader/s on the admissions board and also demonstrate your ability to write well.
- 4). Include as many specific details as possible. Avoid generalizations about yourself and your experiences. Specific details will show your ability to think clearly and coherently about your own experiences, goals and character.
- 5). Include other information that demonstrates why you would make a good candidate for acceptance at GECA. The essay instructions encourage including details about you and your family. Highlight awards you have won, community service projects you have completed, travel and study abroad experiences, foreign languages you already speak and any other relevant information that will help distinguish you as a candidate.
- 6). Engage the reader by writing in active voice and avoid writing in the passive voice.
- 7). Run a spell- and grammar-checker and ask at least one person, such as your current English teacher, to proofread your essay for content and grammatical and spelling errors, including punctuation. The GECA essay instructions note that the admissions board will evaluate each essay on these attributes.
