Treasure Island is a small city on the Gulf Coast of Florida near St. Petersburg. The city lies right on the waterfront and features miles of white sandy beaches that are characteristic of the west Florida shores. The area was inhabited by the Timucua Indians for over a thousand years before the 16th-century arrival of Spanish explorers. The name of the city refers to the fraudulent attempts to boost the value of its real estate at the beginning of the 20th century. Wooden chests were buried and then dug up in an effort to suggest that real treasures existed in the area. Today Treasure Island is a popular tourist destination that offers many beachside attractions, including cafes.
