    • 1). Check the trap daily. Do not leave squirrels trapped for extended periods of time to prevent potential injury to the animal.

    • 2). Investigate options for moving the squirrel from your yard. Check local wildlife regulations regarding trapping and relocating squirrels. Choose a location at least five miles away from your home.

    • 3). Put on a pair of leather work gloves to protect your hands before handling a cage with a trapped squirrel. Squirrels' teeth are extremely sharp. Place a towel over the trap to help calm the squirrel and reduce potential injury to yourself.

    • 4). Transport the squirrel to the new location. Choose a location with trees or brush in which the squirrel will find cover. Avoid leaving the squirrel near homes or structures where it could again become a nuisance.

    • 5). Place the trap on the ground. Stand behind the trap and open the door to release the squirrel. Move completely away from the trap, if necessary, to get the squirrel to leave the trap.
