Most people know that having health insurance is a very costly process.
When you have to buy health insurance on your own not part of a group plan, it's even more expensive.
If you want to lower the cost of this type of insurance there are many things that you can be doing that will help you save some money.
First of all, just like with any type of insurance you can get a higher deductible.
This means that you will be paying a lower monthly payment for coverage but must pay more when something actually happens in order for the coverage to kick in.
Get as healthy as you can.
There are two factors that you need to watch out for when you are trying to get healthy to lower your payments.
The first is to quit smoking.
Being a smoker with individual health insurance will cost much more than if you quit.
Secondly, try your best to lose weight and be closer to a healthy weight as this will help lower the costs.
Try to get a health savings account.
These are accounts that you can set aside that are tax free.
Continue to save money in here that will help cover your higher deductible.
It's better to do this with pre-taxed income than income after taxes as it will go further.
Buy the coverage that you need before you need it.
If you get a variety of health problems then try to get insured, your costs will be higher than when you were healthy.
Do your best to watch out for a group plan that you might be able to join.
A group plan is easier to get a great price as your individual health is not scrutinized quite as much for a better rate.
You can also talk to the insurance company about changing to coverage ratios.
The standard ratio is that the company will pay 80% while you pay 20%.
You can pay a higher percentage and get a lower premium as well.
