Wireless Internet Setup Information
- Connect a standard network cable from a network port on the back of the router to the network input port on the local machine. If there is a network cable connected to the router input (most likely labeled as 'modem'), disconnect it. Connect the power input cable to the back of the router and plug in the router power adapter to an outlet.
- Insert the installation CD for the router into the local CD drive after the router has powered up properly. Often, the software will walk you through the setup with a setup wizard. If this is the case, follow the onscreen instructions.
- Enter the IP address for the router into the address window of a browser (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer) if there is no setup wizard to follow on-screen. Find router-specific IP addresses in the router documentation; it varies depending on the model of router. After the page refreshes, the router configuration page displays, allowing you to configuration the router, including setting up an administrator username and password.
- Select the wireless configuration option from the router interface. This is the screen where selections are made for SSID (Service Set Identifier), which is the name given to the wireless network, the level of security for the router (WPA, WPA2, WEP), and any administrative options like password protection.
Once the wireless network is successfully online, the SSID name will be selected from the various devices as the network access point. If secure is selected, users will be subsequently asked for the security password in order to log into the wireless network. - Select the "Add Wireless Device" option from the Wireless Settings screen. Locate the devices to add to the network (including the local machine being used to configure the router). Most routers allow an automatic selection of devices for the wireless network. Set up selected devices according to the on-screen instructions. Remember to save the settings before leaving the configuration screen and closing the browser.
- Connect the ISP incoming Internet cable to the back of the router in the port labeled "modem." Disconnect the network hard wire between the local machine and the router. Restart the router using the on-screen restart function (located in the menu or as a button on the last screen).
- Locate the wireless configuration settings for the local machine's operating system. In most cases, the various operating systems will display the available wireless networks. (In Windows, check "Control Panel," then "Wireless Network Settings." On Macs: Check "System Preferences," then "Internet & Network.") Accessing the Internet will be as easy as clicking a button once the network SSID name displays and you select it.
