Common Redpoll Range Map

106 38
Common Name: Common Redpoll
Scientific Name: Carduelis flammea
Migration: Partial migrant, irruptive. Some populations migrate and the species experiences periodic irruptions.

Habitat:

Common redpolls are found in boreal and tundra habitats year round, though the northernmost populations will migrate in the winter. These birds prefer coniferous and open mixed coniferous and deciduous forests and scrub habitat, but are absent from dense forests.

They are more likely to be found near the treeline and forest edges, often in mixed flocks with other redpolls and similar birds. They will migrate in large flocks, and have a relatively regular two-year irruption cycle that can bring wintering birds much further south than their typical winter range. The exact extent and timing of irruptions is dependent on northern seed crops which are this species' primary winter food source. A small but steady population of common redpolls is also found in appropriate habitat in New Zealand (not shown on map).
