How to Change the Drive Letter of a Flash Drive

    • 1). Connect the flash drive to your computer. You must be logged on as an administrator, not a guest or limited user, to complete this process.

    • 2). Click "Start," then open the to the "Control Panel," which may be under "Settings" depending on which version of XP you are running. Click on "Performance and Maintenance." If you are using the "Classic View" you won't see the "Performance and Maintenance" option, but will be taken directly to a screen that allows you to complete the next step.

    • 3). Select "Administrative tools," double-click the "Computer Management" tab, and then select "Disk Management," which is on the left side of the window. A list of drives connected to your computer will appear.

    • 4). Right-click your flash drive in the list and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" from the menu. Select "Change" in the next window. A list of drive letters from A to Z will no appear. Note that you cannot assign drive letters to your flash drive that are currently being used on your computer, such as the C drive (primary hard drive).

    • 5). Choose "Assign the following drive letter" and select the drive letter that you want to assign to your flash drive. Click "OK" to save the changes. Click "Yes" in the screen that appears. This will complete the process.
