How to Decorate a Faux Fireplace

    Getting Started

    • 1). Decide whether you prefer to paint or tile the surround to fit the style of the room if needed. An inexpensive way to make anything fit into an interior design project is to paint it. But, when decorating a faux fireplace to look like a real one, tile goes a long way. Though it takes more time and money, it is just as easy to do as tiling the real thing. (If you choose to paint it, skip to step 3.)

    • 2). Prepare the surround for tile, if you have an uneven surface, by skim coating the entire area with thinset. Tack on a temporary support ledge to start your tiles on and use spacers starting with the upper tiles, then legs and finally the cuts that you have to make to finish it off. Grout and wash the tile, according to the manufacturer's instructions as they can all differ a little between brands. (For step by step instructions see 'How to Tile a Surround' in the reference area at the bottom of this article.)

    • 3). Buy a mantle. Every hearth has to have a place to hang stockings for at Christmas and display other favorite items throughout the rest of the year. When decorating a faux fireplace, it is also a great place to mix things up with seasonal decorations, as well as add architectural interest to the space.

    • 4). Install the mantle. Fit it above the surround and place a level on top of it, in the middle. When you are positive that it is level, screw it into the wall. Most mantles come with pre-drilled holes and plugs to cover the screws. If not, space the screws evenly and use wood filler to disguise where you did so.

    Finishing Touches

    • 1). Hang a larger mirror or piece of art above the mantle. This is also a great place to display a framed enlargement of that family portrait or other favorite photograph. When decorating a faux fireplace to look like a real one, the piece needs to fit well to draw the eye upwards. If you cannot find or afford a piece of art that does this, larger mirrors can be found that are cheap and will add depth to the room.

    • 2). Place wood logs in the opening if there is one, to enhance the appearance of it being a working hearth. If that idea does not appeal to you, place candles in the cutout, as many people who have real fireplaces do during the off season. If there is no opening, painting a mural of a lit fire is also an option.

    • 3). Add accessories that would be there if you could really light a fire. Buy a decorative tool set to place at the side, and add a matching screen. These touches will add your personal style when decorating your faux fireplace to look like a real one. Like any interior design project, the details are what makes it successful.
