Whenever a couple is having difficulty trying to conceive, most of the time people will think that it's the woman's fault. That shouldn't be the case. Actually about in one third of cases, difficult conception is due to male infertility. If a couple have been trying for a year or more with no success, they should see a doctor.

There are a number of causes of male infertility to consider. If a couple really want to have a baby, it is important for them to find out if that is what stopping them from getting conceived.

It's common that people think that only the woman needs to watch her health since she will be the one with the baby inside her. That's not true. Health issues can be an important factor in male infertility.

If a man smokes it may reduce his sperm count. He has to stop smoking. Over-consumption of alcohol can hamper sperm production and their normal function; the use of certain medications has the same effect. If the man is taking any prescription medications, he should tell his doctor.

The man should also pay attention to his diet. A diet rich in zinc helps increase sperm count, so he may want to eat a lot of shellfish and eggs.

Apart from lifestyle health factors, another common cause of men infertility is a medical condition known as varicocele. Simply put, it's the presence of a varicose vein in the testicles. The vein is very large and causes heat to accumulate in the testes. This affects the sperm. Varicocele is usually a treatable condition, but surgery is required.

If the couple has a question about the causes of male infertility, the best person to talk to is their doctor. He will be able to give the best advice to treat the condition. The first thing the doctor will want to do is to perform a semen analysis.

Semen analysis is a simple test if compared with the tests that women have to undergo. The test is easy and not going to hurt at all; instructions will be given by the doctor. Usually two samples will be examined, one month apart, so that comparison can be made between the two samples. If there is a problem with the sperm (quantity or quality), the doctor will instruct what to do next. Otherwise he'll decide upon the best plan of action, or recommend possible treatments for infertility.
