Tips on Combining Paint Colors for a Room

    Focal Wall

    • The focal wall does more than give you a place in a room to focus on. It also indicates the room's color scheme. Use this to your advantage when combining your paint colors. Paint the focal wall the dominant color in your color scheme, and then coat the walls around the focal wall with the secondary color in the room. For example, if you've chosen cobalt blue and yellow-gold as your colors, paint the focal wall blue and the walls around it yellow-gold. This brings visual interest to the room, because the paint colors contrast one another.

    Accent Pieces

    • One way to establish a mix of paint colors in a room has little to do with the paint on the wall, but the accessories you have in the room. Many times people choose a color palette based upon a piece they love such as a tapestry or a painted sculpture. When you're deciding on paint colors for your room, look at the decorative accessories that you already have. Chances are you have a couple that feature the same color combinations. Buy paint colors that match these color combinations.

    Warm Colors

    • The rich golden yellows, deep reds and chocolate browns that you find on the fall leaves are just some of the colors that make up a warm color palette. As in nature, these colors automatically look good together on your wall, because they are analogous colors on the color wheel, meaning that they stand in close proximity to one another. If you choose warm colors for your room's paint scheme, choose one color as the dominant color and then accent it with one or two additional colors from the warm color family. For example, make golden yellow the main color of the color palette and red and brown the secondary accent colors.

    Cool Colors

    • Colors such as blue, green and purple fall into the cool color palette. A paint color scheme based on the combination of these colors works well for decorating styles such as eclectic or ocean cottage decorating. In addition to adding coats of paint in these colors to your walls, lay down some dark blue paint on the floor, a coat of apple green paint to the stairs or paint the moldings purple.
