    • 1). Shut down your computer. Disconnect any cables from the back of the computer. Remove all peripherals from your computer.

    • 2). Open your computer case. The exact method to do this depends on the type of case you own. Cases can have screws that hold on the cover or side panel, latches and buttons, or doors that can be easily opened to gain access to the computer.

    • 3). Slide your hard drive or optical drive into the drive bay, located at the front of the computer case. Screw the drive into the drive bay brackets to keep the drive in place.

    • 4). Connect the IDE cable to the back of the drive. The IDE cable is a long ribbon cable with a red strip down one side. Align the cable so that the red strip faces the power interface port on your drive.

    • 5). Connect the other end of the IDE cable to the motherboard's IDE interface port. This is a long, slender port that is located on the right side of the motherboard. Connect a power cable into the IDE drive once the IDE cable is connected.
