First Day of Closet Makeover

• 1). Schedule a free weekend on your calendar to focus on the closet. Make sure you allot time on both days of the weekend. The first day will be for planning, clearing out items and sorting. On the second day, you'll continue sorting items and then organizing closet storage units.
  
  
• 2). Clear out all items from the closet. Group similar items by size and purpose together on a nearby floor. While sorting through items, make a separate pile for items you do not want. Put a blanket down so that items do not scratch your floor or dirty the carpet. Place clothing on a nearby bed.
  
  
• 3). Plan the storage space for the closet. Measure and record the dimensions for the walls of the closet. Utilize every inch of space by using storage for floor, walls, ceiling and behind the door. For the floor, use movable, stackable drawer units, cubbies and baskets on floor shelving. For walls, use peg boards with hooks, shelving and hanging rods. For ceilings, use hooks and ceiling rods to hang items. For behind the closet door, use plastic or cloth hanging bags.
  
  

Second Day of Closet Makeover

• 1). Locate and use existing storage units for shelving, stand-alone floor units and hanging units to save money. Use your closet measurements to find multiple units that will fit the space. Buy other necessary storage units from local home improvement, home furnishings or variety store chains such as IKEA, Home Depot, Lowe's, Target or Walmart.
  
  
• 2). Place the storage units into the closet. Install the wall shelving units, then the hanging units followed by the portable floor units. Make sure that there is clearance space to open the closet door and to move around inside.
  
  
• 3). Place your items into the closet one at a time. Fill up the wall shelving units first, then the hanging units and then the portable units. Lastly, place items into the hanging units on the door.
