How to Curl Your Hair With a Skinny Straightener

    • 1). Turn on your skinny hair straightener and allow it to heat up.

    • 2). Comb your hair to eliminate any tangles or snarls that will keep your curls from looking perfect. Spray a thermal styling protectant all over your hair, making sure the ends are coated with product to shield them from breaking and splitting.

    • 3). Section off a very fine portion of hair, about 1/8 of an inch thick, which is even smaller than the 1/4-inch that is appropriate when using a mid-size hair straightener. The section of hair should also not be any wider than your skinny straightener for most effective curling.

    • 4). Clamp down close to the root or where you want the curl to begin. Twist your wrist inwards towards your head and maintain this position as you slide the straightener all the way down the section of hair. To create a very defined curl, keep twisting the flat iron as you pull it down the lock of hair. Do this slowly for a tighter curl; sliding the straightener a little more quickly down the section of hair will give you looser waves (see Resources for a video).

    • 5). Repeat Step 3 for your entire head of hair. Style the resulting curls with your fingers. Do not use your comb or brush as either of these will break down your newly created curls. Lightly mist hairspray over your finished hairstyle to hold the curls in place.
