How to Decorate Wedding Cakes With Beads & Silk Flowers
- 1). Plan the design of your cake. Use a notepad and colored pencils to sketch out the ideas you have in mind for your cake. Get specific, drawing the types of flowers and the color of the beads you want for the actual version.
- 2). Cover the cake with a layer of buttercream frosting or rolled fondant. White or ivory-hued frosting is a common choice for wedding cakes, but nearly every color imaginable can be used to decorate wedding cakes.
- 3). Create groupings of your silk flowers. Mix and match your chosen flowers into an aesthetically pleasing arrangement. Use several small clusters of silk flowers as accents and one large grouping as the topper for your wedding cake. When you're pleased with the arrangement, snip the wire stems to 2 inches in length with a pair of wire cutters.
- 4). Figure out where you plan to place the beads on your cake. Some decorators choose to wrap a line of beads around the base of each layer, using the flowers as the main focus for the design. Others include the beads in the main design, draping them artfully between the flower arrangements and over each cake layer. Experiment with a few different ways of decorating the cake with your beads by draping the gently on your iced cake for ideas.
- 5). Finalize the design and place the accessories on the cake. Gently insert the stems of the flowers into the cake, pushing until the base of the flower meets the icing. Add more silk flowers and foliage to cover up the insertion points and to make the arrangement look full.
- 6). Cuff a disposable icing bag and slide a plastic coupler base into the bottom of the bag. Place a small round tip over top of the base and secure it with a coupler ring. Scoop one-half cup of matching royal icing that has a thin consistency into the bag.
- 7). Uncuff the bag, twist it near the top to prevent the icing from escaping. Squeeze the bag gently to start the flow of icing.
- 8). Pipe small dots of icing on the wedding cake where you plan to place the string of beads. Use enough icing to attach the beads to the cake. Royal icing sets up fast, so it's important to work quickly as your decorate.
