Urologist Can Aid Women With Decreased Libido Problems

Most women who went to see their physicians for urology consultation have also hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Those who are at risk to this are middle aged ladies with high body mass index (BMI). According to some specialist, there is a possibility that all females who have urology problems should undergo screening with their urologist for disorder of sensual desire.

Treatments and medications for the usual problems in the genitourinary tract can cause this disorder. Those in premenopausal and half of those in postmenopausal were determined to have decreased desire for intimacy. However, according to those who were interviewed, they find that the content is not at all awkward to answer. There is another possible condition which can increase the risk for HSDD which is the vulvodynia or the spasm of the pelvic muscle. This may cause pain, discomfort and low libido during intercourse.

There was a survey that was conducted for three months on 339 women, 18 years old and above with complaints of kidney stones, urinary incontinence and hematuria. Doctors found out that those with pelvic-related disorders such as urinary incontinence and pelvic pain are not likely to experience HSDD unlike those with kidney stones, urinary tract infection and hematuria.

There are several medications that can contribute to low sexual desire. The most common drugs are the following:


Anticancer drugs - causes vaginal bleeding and discharges, irregularities on the monthly menstrual cycle, depression and itching.

Antidepressants, Anticonvulsants and Neuroleptics or Antipsychotic drugs - may cause low libido

Birth control pills - progestin- dominant pills may lead to loss of libido and because of hormonal shifts it may cause dryness of the vagina.

Sedatives - may lead to reduced arousal and desire.

Most patients are unaware that their disorder can impair their quality of life and also of their partner. For example in men, erectile dysfunction is an indication of heart disease while on women; it can be a sign of hormonal deficiencies and depression. There are medications for men's sexual issues like the little blue pill. Their treatments have been studied and done for almost 50 years. Unfortunately, treatment for ladies is still in its infancy. Patients can seek the help of a female urologist by talking to them about their issues or they could change their medications.
