How to Draw the Skeleton of A Mammoth
The now extinct mammoth is a large terrestrial mammal.
Although they belong to the elephant family, mammoths existed in the Glacier Period and the reason for their extinction is still unknown.
Fifteen teeth tall and nine feet long, these herbivores were covered with thick, long, and dense fur, and possessed large tusks & significantly big curved trunks.
Mammoth trunks measured between three and a half meters to eleven meters and they used it for finding food under the snow and protection.
Here we provide you with guidelines to draw the skeleton of a mammoth.
We are considering the profile view of the animal facing towards the right.
Things You Will Need 1.
Pencil 2.
Paper/ Canvas 3.
Colors (optional) 4.
Paint Brush (Optional) 1.
Skull i.
Head: Mammoths have a wide dome shaped head.
a)Draw a large oblong.
b)Draw a small hump on the top section to depict the raised structure of the mammoth's head.
c)Draw a few lines with a light hand to portray the eyes & ears sockets.
ii.
Jaws a)Upper jaw: Draw a 'C' shaped line at the base of the mouth to separate the upper and lower jaw.
b)Lower jaw: Draw a curved line from the base of the head until the other end of the lower jaw defined by the above drawn 'C' shaped line.
iii.
Tusks a)Mammoth tusks are elongated upper incisors.
Extend a long curved line going all the way down until his knees level and then coming up almost until the eye level.
b)Double up this line to make it look thick and mighty.
Note: Draw a Pair.
iv.
Teeth a)On the lower jaw, draw large rectangular teeth.
2.
Spinal Column i.
Neck Vertebrae a)Draw a slanted line extending from the base of the head.
b)Give dimension to this line by doubling it and drawing small irregular thin rectangles.
ii.
Back Bone a)Mammoth has a sloping back.
b)Extend the neck vertebra with a slanted line.
c)Double up this line and shade it.
d)Draw small irregular shapes on the upper side of the vertebrate.
e)Also, extend vertical slanted strips on the upper side of the backbone, ending it with a rounded tip.
iii.
Ribs a)Draw thin rectangular strips covering the entire backbone section.
b)The first rib is the longest and gets shorter as you move towards the hip.
3.
Forelimbs i.
Scapula: Draw a large irregular triangle at the beginning of the back vertebrae.
ii.
Limbs a)Draw a vertical line extended from the Scapula.
Double up this line and round the corners.
b)Sketch a large irregular potato shaped figure to depict the knee joint.
c)Draw another slightly slanted vertical line.
Double it up and shade it appropriately.
d)Make strong looking phalanges at the end of the limb.
Note: Draw a pair.
4.
Pelvic & Hip Joint a)At the end of the backbone, draw a triangle shape cupped by a 'C' shaped line and shade it.
5.
Hind limbs a)Extend a vertical line from the lower section of the hip joint.
b)Double this line and round off the corners.
c)Draw another slanted line and double it up.
d)Ensure the limbs look strong, wide, and pillar like.
e)Draw the mammoth's phalanges.
6.
Tail Vertebrae a)Draw a short curved line from the hip socket.
b)Double up this line.
c)Draw vertical lines to depict the joints and shade it appropriately.
