How to Improve Soil With Organic Fertilizers
- 1). Double-dig your garden to break up tight soil, provide room for root growth and ensure air and water circulation. Double-digging is one of the most effective and organic amendments for the planting bed. Dig up the top 10 to 12 inches of soil and move it to the side. Dig into the next 10 to 12 inches of available soil to remove roots and rocks and break up any clumps. This allows for good air and water circulation up to the roots of the plants.
- 2). Mix soil amendments for long-lasting soil nutrition. Turn organic compost, rotted manure, rotted garden scraps, rotten fruits and veggies, coffee grounds and egg shells into the soil you removed from your garden. Mix the soil well to end with a combination of half natural soil and half amendments. This will provide rich, hearty and organic nutrition to your plants.
- 3). Shovel the soil mixture back into your planting site and even it out, then add organic fertilizer to the top 3 to 4 inches of soil for an additional boost for the plants.
