What Is TC Bedding?
- Thread count is defined as the number of threads per square inch of fabric. According to Linen Closet, the highest thread count in fabric made in the United States is 310. European fabric may have a higher count.
- Fabrics with higher thread counts are thinner and softer. BedSheetsOnly.com does not recommend the use of high thread count sheets on children's beds, because they are less durable.
- Some manufacturers twist two threads together to make a thicker, two-ply, thread. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission states that multi-ply thread should be counted as one thread when determining thread count. Some manufacturers count the threads of the ply separately, so the high thread count of their fabric will appeal to customers.
- The weave which produces the highest quality uses single-ply thread and single picks. Picks are the number of threads woven horizontally. All singe-ply fabrics are approximately 400 thread count or less. A fabric with a higher thread is made from multi-ply thread or multi-picks.
- Thread count is only one thing to consider when purchasing bedding. Shoppers also consider size, fit, durability and price.
- Cotton Incorporated's Norma Keyes highly recommends touching bedding before you buy it. Most major bedding retailers provide samples.
