We have all been hearing so much about the Swine Flu (also known as the H1N1 virus) in recent news.
As news of this strain of the flu has quickly spread across our nation, one question racing through people's minds is, "how do I treat this flu if I have it?" Because this is an uncommon strain of the flu, I thought it would be very helpful to provide all of you with some basic information on Swine Flu treatments so that if you happen to get infected with this virus, you will be better prepared to treat it.
The first step to combating the H1N1 virus is to protect yourself from contact with the those who have been infected.
The most important preventative measures you can take against infection are to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, wash your hands often with soap and water, avoid touching you mouth, nose, or eyes, and avoid contact with sick people.
The CDC recommends that if you live in areas where people have become ill with "influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people, except to seek medical care.
" A very important thing for people to understand is that symptoms and treatments for mild cases of the Swine Flu are the same as those for any seasonal flu.
The CDC recommends using oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with the less common H1N1 variety.
Antiviral drugs can also help to make your illness milder and make you feel better faster if you do get sick.
Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body, and they may also prevent serious flu complications.
In addition to being treated the same as the seasonal flu, the H1N1 virus also spreads in the same way as the seasonal flu.
If you do get sick you can expect to be contagious for about one day before you start showing symptoms and for up to seven days after you get sick.
Make sure you take the proper precautions now so that you significantly reduce your chances of catching the Swine Flu.
