How to Build Steps Outdoors
- 1). Place the stringers thirty-six inches apart.
- 2). Measure the distance from a point three inches down from the top of the left stringer to a point three inches up from the bottom of the right stringer. Cut two 2x4s to fit the measurement.
- 3). Attach the 2x4s in a cross pattern directly against the stringers.
- 4). Measure and cut a 4x4 post that will serve as a vertical support to the height you need and attach it to the stringer.
- 5). Place a 1x6 stringer across the steps and mark the ends. Repeat to make sure that two 1x6 inch boards fit on each step. Mark them and repeat until all 1x6's are marked and ready to cut.
- 6). Cut all 1x6 inch boards to the marks and be sure to follow your lines.
- 7). Place the cut 1x6s on the bottom and screw them directly to the stringer. Make a notch so it fits directly with the upright when you reach the top step.
- 8). Attach 2x4s vertically behind the upright.
- 9). Add railing by spacing treated 2x4s evenly at each step. Screw in place. Use a treated 2x4 as a handrail.
