Grammy Award Pop Predictions 2010

106 9

The 52nd annual Grammy Awards will be presented January 31, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. The nominees are voted on and winners selected by members of the Recording Academy.

The Grammy Awards give out over 100 different trophies. These are my predictions of the winners in the general and pop categories.

General

Record of the Year
  • Beyonce - "Halo"
  • Black Eyed Peas - "I Gotta Feeling"
  • Kings of Leon - "Use Somebody"

  • Lady Gaga - "Poker Face"
  • Taylor Swift - "You Belong With Me"

Although not my pick for winner in this category, Beyonce's "Halo" is a big love song ballad that appeals across a wide range of Recording Academy members. Beyonce is also a past favorite of Grammy voters having won seven awards. However, she has not yet won Record of the Year despite being nominated twice before.

Album of the Year
  • Beyonce - I Am...Sasha Fierce
  • Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D.
  • Lady Gaga - The Fame
  • Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King
  • Taylor Swift - Fearless

The Dave Matthews Band have only won one Grammy Award despite having been nominated 12 times. This looks like their year to take home the coveted Album of the Year award. The album's dedication to fallen band member LeRoi Moore will also encourage voters to celebrate this effort.

Song of the Year
  • Beyonce - "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)"
  • Kings of Leon - "Use Somebody"
  • Lady Gaga - "Poker Face"
  • Maxwell - "Pretty Wings"
  • Taylor Swift - "You Belong With Me"

Taylor Swift is rightfully recognized as one of the most talented young songwriters in the music business. This category is the perfect opportunity to recognize and encourage her talents. "You Belong With Me" remains a picture perfect song of teen love.

    Best New Artist
    • Zac Brown Band
    • Keri Hilson
    • MGMT
    • Silversun Pickups
    • The Ting Tings

This is a very difficult category to predict. However, Keri Hilson made a powerful debut on the pop and R&B scenes after moving from the songwriting background to mainstage focus. This is the category many feel should belong to Lady Gaga, but she was ruled ineligible due to a dance music category nomination last year for "Just Dance."

    Pop

    Best Female Pop Vocal
    • Adele - "Hometown Glory"
    • Beyonce - "Halo"
    • Katy Perry - "Hot and Cold"
    • Pink - "Sober"
    • Taylor Swift - "You Belong With Me"

This is likely to be one of an armload of Grammy Awards taken home by Beyonce. Adele took this award last year, but I do not expect she will be given the nod for a second consecutive year.

    Best Male Pop Vocal
    • John Legend - "This Time"
    • Maxwell - "Love You"
    • Jason Mraz - "Make It Mine"
    • Seal - "If You Don't Know Me By Now"
    • Stevie Wonder - "All About the Love Again"

2009 was not a great year for male pop vocalists. However, Maxwell's comeback after 8 years will be a story that warms the heart of many Grammy voters.

Best Pop Duo or Group With Vocal
    • Black Eyed Peas - "I Gotta Feeling"
    • Bon Jovi - "We Weren't Born to Follow"
    • The Fray - "Never Say Never"
    • Daryl Hall and John Oates - "Sara Smile"
    • MGMT - "Kids"

Any way you look at it, 2009 was an amazing year for the Black Eyed Peas. "I Gotta Feeling" spent 14 weeks at the top of the charts, and it puts a smile on nearly any pop music fan's face.

    Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals
    • Rosanne Cash and Bruce Springsteen - "Sea of Heartbreak"
    • Ciara and Justin Timberlake - "Love Sex Magic"
    • Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz - "Lucky"
    • Willie Nelson and Norah Jones - "Baby It's Cold Outside"
    • Taylor Swift and Colbie Caillat - "Breathe"

Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz define contemporary singer-songwriter pop. "Lucky" will bring a smile to most listeners's faces with its effortless blend of voices.

    Best Pop Instrumental
    • Herb Alpert - "Besame Mucho"
    • Bela Fleck - "Throw Down Your Heart"
    • Imogen Heap - "The Fire"
    • Maxwell - "Phoenix Rise"
    • Marcus Miller - "Funk Joint"

Bela Fleck is a winner of nine Grammy Awards in the past 15 years. He would be considered the odds on favorite to take home a tenth this year.

    Best Pop Instrumental Album
    • Chris Botti - In Boston
    • Hiroshima - Legacy
    • Booker T. Jones - Potato Hole
    • The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman - Modern Art
    • Spyro Gyra - Down the Wire

Booker T. Jones, best known as leader of Booker T. and the MGs, has created some of the definitive instrumentals in pop and R&B history. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. This album seems to tower over the other nominees.

    Best Pop Vocal Album
    • Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D.
    • Colbie Caillat - Breakthrough
    • Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted
    • The Fray - The Fray
    • Pink - Funhouse

All I Ever Wanted is an album that has enhanced Kelly Clarkson's reputation as one of the top pop vocalists in the business. It deserves this award, and there is a good chance Grammy voters will agree.
