How to Plant Oregano Seeds
- 1). Place the oregano seeds in a plastic bag and seal it closed. Store in the refrigerator for one week before planting. This process, called stratifying, forces the seeds to break dormancy so they can germinate.
- 2). Fill a seed-starting flat to within ½ inch of the rim with potting soil. Water the soil until it is evenly moist throughout.
- 3). Sow the oregano seeds on the soil surface, spacing the seeds 2 inches apart in all directions. Oregano seeds are small, so some over-sowing is acceptable. Cover the seeds with a 1/8-inch layer of soil.
- 4). Cover the flat with a layer of plastic wrap, which helps retain the soil moisture during germination. Place the flat in a brightly lit, 70 degree Fahrenheit room.
- 5). Remove the plastic wrap once the seeds sprout, which takes 7 to 14 days. Move the flat to an area that receives direct sunlight. Water when the soil surface begins to dry, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.
- 6). Thin the seedlings once their second set of leaves unfurl. Pluck out the excess seedlings so that all the plants are spaced at least 2 inches apart.
