Synthetic Hair Vs. Human hair

There are many reasons that a person may suffer from hair loss. Most of these are considered fairly common knowledge in today's hair replacement industry.  Hair loss may be caused by heredity and aging, diet, and even over exposure to chemicals.  No matter the reason that one suffers from loss of hair, one of the options available for treatment is the synthetic hair transplant.

Hair implants, no matter what type they are, are not the same as hair transplants. The process of a hair transplant involves actually removing healthy hair from the back of a person's scalp and then grafting them on the top of the head, thus replacing the lost hair. As an alternative, synthetic hair implants are essentially inserted into the patient's scalp one by one. The synthetic implant procedure can be done in one session or can be done over time. This would depend on the patient's preference, but also on the severity of the hair loss.

When considering synthetic implants, it is generally accepted that the downside far outweighs any benefits that may be gained from the procedure. While it is true that the patient will more than likely emerge from the treatment sessions with a full head of long, thick hair, this result is at best going to be fleeting.

Hair implants, unfortunately, can and do tend to come out of the scalp after a period of time. Synthetic hair implants can also cause severe scarring and cause any variety of scalp infections. In some extreme cases, this scarring of the scalp can be permanent. Putting an exclamation point on these issues, the United States FDA in 1983 actually banned the use of the fibers found in synthetic hair implants.

Synthetic Hair Vs. Human hair

Human hair extensions offer many solutions to the problems presented by the use of synthetic hair implants.  There is an almost endless array of human hair qualities available for use as extensions, and you will find that they will be priced according to this quality (or lack thereof).

In other words, the less you pay for your extensions, the lower the quality will be.  In very high quality human hair, you will find that the cuticle (the outermost part of the hair shaft) will still be perfectly aligned and will all face in the same direction. In lower quality human hair the cuticles are not facing in the same direction, which means that the hair can become matted and interlock, similar to Velcro.

Synthetic hair, on the other hand, is a manmade fiber that is fashioned to look like natural human hair. It has a different sheen than human hair and behaves differently than natural human hair as well. Synthetic hair does not generally match well with human hair. Synthetic hair extensions, as mentioned above, are always going to be the a less expensive option than natural human hair.

One benefit of synthetic hair that many people enjoy is that it will hold pretty much any hair style very well. Some examples of this would be a curly style- when you curl a synthetic hair, it will hold that curl for a very long time- perhaps even several days.
