How do I Start an Easing Stair Rail?
- 1). Set the easing piece on the work bench so that the end that will connect to the rest of the handrail is pointing up. Mark the center, and drill a hole that is 2 inches deep. Do so by using a 5/16-inch bit. Screw in the bolt with either vise grips or the included rail bolt wrench.
- 2). Drill a 5/18-inch hole in the end of the handrail where you will attached the easing.
- 3). Turn the handrail over so that the underside is pointing up. Measure back 1 1/2 inches from the end and drill a 2 1/4-inch-deep hole with a 1-inch boring bit. Insert the bolt to make sure it fits.
- 4). Insert the plastic washer into the hole you drilled in the bottom of the railing. Hold it in place as you insert the bolt that is attached on one end of the edging. Insert the metal washer into the hole and tighten it onto the bolt. Tighten the bolt so that it is 80 percent tightened.
- 5). Apply wood glue to the join between the end of the railing and the end of the easing stair rail. Tighten the bolt again.
- 6). Put a 1-inch plug in the hole on the bottom of the railing. Make sure you coat it with wood glue.
