    • 1). Check the broiler coils for nicks and breaks. When a broiler's coils eat to cook food, electricity runs through the heating elements. If there are any defects or damaged areas, this could cause electrical sparks or surges to create a foul burning odor. These problems should be immediately addressed by a certified technician.

    • 2). Inspect the gas line. If the Maytag oven is heated by propane gas, leaks may be present. Inspect the gas lines visually and listen carefully for leaks. Gas leaks most often smell like rotten eggs. If you suspect this to be the source of the odor, have a technician repair it and do not use the oven until it is fixed. You can also spray soapy water on the gas line when turned on to look for bubbling. If bubbles appear, there is probably a gas leak. Also check the electrical power cord for burn marks.

    • 3). Clean the broiler and the rest of the Maytag oven thoroughly. The most common source of smells emanating from broilers and/or ovens is the burning of old food and grease. Use oven cleaner and clean, coarse cleaning pads to clean the broiler and oven. Wash the broiler racks and shelves in a dishwasher.

    • 4). Look behind and under the double oven for dead rodents. When heat radiates from a broiler or oven that is in use, it can cause carcasses to warm and emit foul stenches. If you find a dead rodent, look for possible entries and exits to seal them and prevent further infestation.
