    • 1). Connect the external monitor to your Windows 7 laptop. Typically you will do this using a VGA or HDMI cable; the exact method may vary depending on the model of laptop and monitor you have.

    • 2). Click the "Start" icon on the Windows 7 taskbar to open the Start menu.

    • 3). Click "Control Panel" on the right side of the Start menu.

    • 4). Click "Display" and then click "Connect to an external display." The "Change the appearance of your displays" window opens.

    • 5). Click the drop-down arrow to the right of "Multiple displays." Click "Duplicate these displays" to view the same display on both screens. Click "Extend these displays" to show the primary display on one screen and nothing but the wallpaper on the other screen (you will be able to drag items from your primary screen to the extended screen). Click "Show desktop on 1" or "Show desktop on 2" to display the screen only on a specific screen.

    • 6). Click "Apply" and then click "OK."
