How to Trim a Gleditsia Tree

    • 1). Remove any dead, diseased or damaged branches from the Gleditsia tree any time of the year. With the loppers, cut the branches at the branch collar, which is the area where the branch meets the tree.

    • 2). Prune any crossing or vertical branches from the honey locust. Cut off the branches at the branch collar using loppers.

    • 3). Cut back any overgrown branches to within the confines of the other branches. Cut the branches back with the pruners.

    • 4). Remove any low-growing branches from the honey locust tree. Cut any branches below 6 feet in height from the tree at the branch collar. Use the loppers to remove the branches.

    • 5). Prune off water sprouts, the small spindly growth in the Gleditsia tree, as well as suckers, which are branches growing from the base of the tree. Remove these branches at the base of the tree with pruners.
