How to Choose Bird Toys
- 1). Obtain perches of various sizes, shapes and colors. Placing a few different sized perches in a bird's cage and hanging toys around them lets the bird play comfortably. Perches can be used as a toy if your bird likes to say "Step up" and practice stepping up.
- 2). Examine the bird toy and make sure that nothing is frayed and that your bird could not hurt herself on it. Some rope toys seem innocent but if they are frayed the bird could possibly get his feet stuck in it. If the toy looks like it presents any danger to the bird, do not give it to your bird.
- 3). Compare the size of the toy to the size of your bird. Bigger birds will shred small toys apart in moments. Small birds cannot always manipulate the larger bird toys. Buy bird toys that suit your bird's size.
- 4). Choose toys that have various kinds of texture to help stimulate your bird. Different textures give birds opportunities to explore with their beaks and feet.
- 5). Giving your bird shredding toys allows him to pull a toy apart and destroy them. This stimulates a bird because it can use its beak to pull things apart.
- 6). Give your bird toys that hide food and treats. Birds love to explore and try to figure out how to get to the treat inside. These types of toys are designed to make birds think and use some of their instincts to find food.
- 7). Create some noise with your bird by giving it toys that have bells and other noise making devices. Birds love to play with these types of toys and they enjoy learning how to make noises with the toys.
