How to Tow a 34' Airstream
- 1). Raise the hitch jack on the tongue of the Airstream slightly higher than the trailer hitch ball on the towing vehicle. You can measure the distance with a tape measure or estimate it and adjust as needed.
- 2). Remove the safety pin on the trailer hitch and push the locking lever forward to raise it.
- 3). Back the towing vehicle to place the hitch ball beneath the hitch jack. Have a friend guide you, if needed.
- 4). Lower the hitch jack to couple the tongue of the trailer and the hitch ball. Close the locking lever and slide in the safety pin.
- 5). Raise the hitch jack to its full height. Attach the leveling bars to the tongue and use the lever on the tongue to increase the tension. Retract the hitch jack fully.
- 6). Attach the safety chains to the frame of the tow vehicle, crossing them under the hitch.
- 1). Pull the tow vehicle forward slowly. Ease on the brakes to test how the vehicle stops with the trailer in tow. Always stop and start slowly.
- 2). Make wide turns when towing the Airstream. Pay attention to the traffic around you and signal in advance when making turns.
- 3). Account for the length of the tow vehicle and trailer when merging with traffic or changing lanes. Check your blind spots and slowly merge into the lane.
- 1). Place the tow vehicle in reverse and slowly ease off the brake.
- 2). Turn the bottom of the steering wheel in the same direction you want the rear of the trailer to move.
- 3). Straighten the steering wheel to back the trailer in straight when you are in the correct position. Pull forward and try again if you are not in the correct position.
