How to Feed a GFCI off the Load of a GFCI
- 1). Plug a lamp into the GFCI outlet you will modify. Turn on the lamp.
- 2). Turn off the circuit breaker connected to the GFCI-protected outlet. The lamp should go off.
- 3). Unplug the lamp from the outlet. Remove the screw holding the outlet cover plate. Use a flat-blade screwdriver.
- 4). Remove the two screws holding the GFCI to the electrical box. Use a flat blade screwdriver.
- 5). Pull the GFCI straight out of the electrical box. Pull the GFCI out as far as the attached wire will allow.
- 6). Identify the line wires to the GFCI. The back of the GFCI will be marked "LINE." Look for a black terminal wire marked "HOT." Look for a white terminal wire marked "WHITE." Add an additional GFCI outlet if there are no wires connected to the terminals marked "LOAD."
- 7). Run electrical cable between the existing GFCI outlet and the new GFCI outlet. Use the same size electrical cable as that feeding the existing GFCI.
- 8). Strip one inch of insulation from the end of each black and white wire. Use a wire stripper.
- 9). Shape the ends of each wire into a loop. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers.
- 10
Connect the new wire's ends in the existing GFCI's electrical box to the GFCI's "LOAD" side. Place the white wire on the terminal marked "WHITE." Place the black wire on the terminal marked "HOT." - 11
Remove the wire nut from the bare copper ground wires in the existing GFCI's electrical box. Twist the wire nut in a counter-clockwise direction. - 12
Add the new cable's bare copper ground wire into the existing bundle of ground wires. Twist the wire nut in a clockwise direction to connect the ground wires together. - 13
Connect the wire ends to the new GFCI terminals marked "LINE." Connect the white wire to the terminal marked "WHITE." Connect the black wire to the terminal marked "HOT." Connect the bare copper ground wire to the green screw marked "GND." - 14
Install both GFCI outlets into their electrical boxes. Install the outlets with the two mounting screws. Use a flat-blade screwdriver. - 15
Install the cover plates with a flat-blade screwdriver. - 16
Turn the outlets' circuit breaker on. - 17
Plug a lamp into each GFCI. - 18
Press the test light on each GFCI. The lamp will turn off if the GFCI is working properly. - 19
