Window Cling Project With Polymer Clay
- When designing a window cling sculpture in polymer clay, keep in mind two important characteristics: how the sculpture will look and how the weight will be distributed.
The choice of subject is important because not all sculptures will look good on a window. The best items are relatively flat, or at least spread out well over a flat plane. Some good choices include picture frames, flower heads, butterflies, flat shapes (like hearts or stars) or any images rendered in two-dimensional clay. You can get a good sense of how the sculpture will look when hung by holding it up to the window as you're working (make sure to do this when the light is good).
For best results, create shapes that are lightweight, but sturdy. Avoid too many small, delicate pieces on your sculpture and go for chunky designs. Keep the finished product small; use about a golf ball-sized ball of clay or less in each piece. Any more than that, and it will be hard to hang it. - Plan where you're going to fasten the suction cup attachments while you're making the clay sculpture. This includes deciding whether you want to attach the cups directly to the sculpture or hang the sculpture from hooks attached to suction cups above. In most cases, the latter is easier and only requires making large holes in the piece through which to thread the hooks (make sure these holes aren't too close to the edge).
If you attach the suction cups directly to the sculpture, create a cup-shaped groove in the clay before baking, one that's a little bigger than the nob on the back of the suction cup and deep enough to insert this nob into. After baking, attach the suction cup to this spot using liberal amounts of strong, clear glue, such as hot glue or epoxy (the latter is better for heavier projects). If you like, you you might incorporate this method into your design; for example, if you build a window cling in the shape of a climbing frog, attach four small suction cups to his feet.
When deciding how many suction cups to attach to a piece and how big they should be, err on the side of being able to hold too much weight, especially since the plastic will deteriorate in time and in the sunlight.
