Black Afro Styles

Afros have been worn by many generations throughout black history. The versatility and ease allow wearers to have freedom merged with style. Additionally, afros capture the attention of others letting the wearer stand out in a crowd. Afros are usually natural black hair blown out with a blow dryer or the curls combed out to the end. Instead of fighting the frizz of curly hair, afros allow wearers to embrace the frizz with a popular hairstyle. - Braids and twists can give a new style and sleekness to your afro. Have your hairdresser give you cornrows in the front with your fro out in the back. Twists that are flat to your scalp may be easier to do if you have a short afro. Or, try cornrows going up one side of your head and have a crinkled afro cascading down the other side. Keep it simple with a part down the middle and cornrows going down both sides.
- Give your afro a different look with a curly fro. To get a voluminous and pliable fro Essence suggests you, "Simply blow it dry, set it on hot rollers, and then finger-style." Choose a medium to large roller depending on your length. Larger rollers result in looser curls. If you don't want to roller-set your hair, try Bantu knots. For Bantu knots twirl a section of hair in one direction until it circles around itself close to your scalp. Tuck the ends under the knot or use a bobby pin to secure them. The knots can be done on wet or dry hair. When taken down they become bouncy, vibrant curls. Pick out the roots to give them more volume.
- Instead of trying to obtain a perfectly round afro go for a more abstract fro. Let the fro's edges flow freely and where they want. Instyle suggests that if you keep styling products to a minimum, this style should seem organic. You want chic styles to look like it took less effort. Also, try a wash and go fro for an abstract look. Once out of the shower add a leave in and leave your hair alone as it dries. You can shake your head to make it puff but let it dry and make it's own fro. Abstract afros work well with accessories like headband, flowers and hair jewels.
