How to Paint a Spackled Ceiling
- 1). Remove as many large items from the room as possible, such as couches, chairs and other large furniture. Cover anything that remains with drop cloths to prevent paint splatters.
- 2). Apply painter's tape on the wall where it meets the ceiling. If you're going to be painting the walls after the ceiling, skip this step and save yourself some time.
- 3). Dust the ceiling, especially in the corners, to remove any dirt or dust buildup that has accumulated.
- 4). Paint a cut-in line on the outside edge of the ceiling next to the tape. A cut-in line allows you to paint around the edges, where a roller may be too large to fit, and creates an outline for you to paint inside. It should be approximately 2 to 3 inches wide.
- 5). Pour your paint in the tray and roll your foam roller back and forth through the paint to saturate the roller with enough paint to finish the ceiling, but ensure the roller isn't dripping with paint. You must use a foam roller, which is also known as a thick-nap roller, in order to get paint in all the spackles.
- 6). Begin on one side of the room and paint in one direction straight across. Do not roll back and forth over the texture, since the spackles begin to peel off when they get wet.
- 7). Apply another coat of paint, if necessary, after the first coat dries. Paint in the same direction as you did for the first coat.
