Good Colors for Bathrooms

    Cabinetry and Trim

    • If there is one room where colors in cabinetry and trim work can differ from those of the rest of the house, it is the bathroom. A neutral white (not too blue, not too yellow) is easy to build a color scheme around and will reflect light in the bathroom, so it is a particularly good choice for a small powder room. A light-colored stained wood is also a good choice for a small space, but remember that the stain color must be coordinated with the wall and fixture colors. For example, a golden oak stain will appear even more yellow if the walls are painted a shade of violet, which is opposite (the complement of) yellow on the color wheel. A medium-to-dark stain or paint color on cabinetry and trim can be used to add drama, to warm up a large bathroom or to hide dirt and scuff marks in a child's bathroom.

    Fixtures and Hardware

    • Many color choices are available in porcelain tubs, toilets and sinks, and new glass vessel sinks offer even more variety. Classic white porcelain is still a good choice and is standard in combination with soft blues and greens for a spa look. White also will allow the most versatility in future redecorating. Deep, dark colors in porcelain lend an air of glamour and sophistication and help camouflage dirt in a busy bathroom. The color of metal hardware in light fixtures, faucets and robe hooks should match the rest of the hardware in the house, but there is no "right" color. Most color schemes in bathrooms can be used with everything from brushed nickel to antique brass.

    Walls and Floors

    • Paint colors can lighten or darken a bathroom and set the mood or style more quickly and easily than perhaps anything else in the structure of a bathroom. If the woodwork and porcelain fixtures are white, soft or pale colors in combination with them will provide a soothing atmosphere for a master bath. However, a bold or rich wall color combined with white fixtures can set the stage for an interesting color scheme in any size bath without the risk of making the room look too dark. Consider rich fruit-inspired colors for a children's or guest bathroom or a deep burgundy for a stunning powder room. Always take into consideration the floor. If the home is new construction with the bathroom floor matching most of the rest of the house, work with that color. For example, a dark brown floor combined with dark walls and fixtures may be too somber for a bathroom, and a lighter color on the walls may be a better choice. If renovating and selecting a new floor for the bathroom, select one to work with the new color scheme.

    Finishing Touches

    • A piece of art, sculpture or a vase is a perfect item from which to draw colors for not only walls but also rugs and other accessories. A multi-colored glass vessel sink or colors in the floor tiles may lend inspiration. Remember that several colors of similar brightness or depth will give a bathroom a busy look when used in equal amounts. Use neutrals in some features of the bathroom and play off them with one dominant color and small amounts of other colors.
