How to Test a Circuit Breaker with a Meter

    • 1). Set your multimeter to voltage mode, or "Volts AC."

    • 2). Touch the multimeter's red-wired prong on the terminal screw of the circuit. This should be a hole near the bottom of the individual circuit you are testing.

    • 3). Touch the multimeter's black-wired prong to the ground in the breaker box.

    • 4). Read the meter. It should be registering the voltage of power coming through the circuit. If the number is 0, turn off the main power before you replace the broken circuit.
