How to Sleep With Bad Knee Pain
- 1). Begin by taking a pain reliever about 30 minutes before bedtime. The best kind of pain reliever is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such Ibuprofen, Naproxen or aspirin. Tylenol is also an excellent choice for pain. If you can get one of these with a sleep aid included--even better.
- 2). Make sure your bed has an extra blanket on it that will cover your knees. It does not have to cover any other area if the night is warm, However, pain worsens at night when body temperature lowers, and keeping your knee warmer than the rest of you will help keep the pain to a minimum.
- 3). Using a heating pad is good if the weather is cold and the room is going to get chilly. Placing the heating pad between the sheets and your skin to avoid direct contact, and set it on medium or low. This can help soothe the pain so you can fall asleep. Be sure to buy a heating pad with an automatic timer for shut-off, as falling asleep with a heating pad can be very dangerous.
- 4). During hotter weather, or if a heating pad is not an option, using a topical analgesic rub can help create a warm sensation that will ease away some of the pain. Rub the cream into your sore knee, being sure to get the back of the joint as well, then cover the entire joint with a warm towel.
- 5). Elevate the sore knee. Prop a pillow under the knee and the ankle of the sore leg. This keeps circulation moving and helps to rid the joint of any swelling that may be present.
