As anyone who has lived in both houses and apartments knows, there are many differences between the two types of residences.
Single family home dwellers are basically on their own, lords of the manor, while apartment dwellers are more like tenants in someone else's house, whether or not the unit is owned.

Switch out the locks.
You never know who is holding the keys to your apartment when you move in, so it's a good idea to do something about the locks straight off.
Some management companies or owners may be against you handling the job on your own, so let them know what you are about to do.
In some cases, they will offer to do it for you and you can even avoid the expense.
If they have some policy which dictates only one type of lock can be used, simply ask them to switch your lock with that from another vacant apartment or the store room.

Call out any problems.
You never know how 'on top of things' the super or management of your building will be until you live there for a little while.
If you notice problems like burnt out light bulbs while you are making the rounds, call them out to management.
No owner will want problems and should get on the matter immediately.
After all, it is a security risk for obvious reasons.

Keep an eye on the neighbors.
As mentioned earlier, sometimes the thing to worry about is who's living next door or on an adjacent floor.

Again neighbors who are careless with their own security measures can put you at risk.
Take the example of the patio or deck doors.
If someone is able to get inside a neighbor's house, it will be very easy to get to your deck as well.
Never leave the house without locking your patio or deck sliding doors.
