You must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver's license for at least five years before you can apply for driver's education instructor certification. These programs generally consist of at least four courses, three of which deal with theory and one of which is a practicum. The full program can generally be completed over the period of a single semester or less.
- 3). Get a medical examination report. You have to bring a medical examination report to your physician and have him fill it out. Your physician is required to declare that you do not suffer from any condition that will impair your ability to work as a driver instructor. Conditions that prevent you from qualifying as a driver's education instructor include addiction to drugs or alcohol. Submit your driver's education instructor certificate application no more than 90 days after you physician completes the medical examination report.
- 4). Complete an Application for Driver Education Instructor Certificate. Find this application form on the Michigan Department of State website. On the application, you must include your personal information, a transcript from your completed driver's education instructor preparation program and your medical examination report. Submit your completed application, along with the $45 application fee, to the Michigan Department of State, Licensing Unit, Lansing MI, 48918.
