From the mid 1800s through the first half of the 20th century, many Hungarians emigrated to New York City and to other cities across the U.S. For many years, Hungarian food was relatively easy to find, but over the years the number of Hungarian restaurants has dwindled as immigrant families became increasingly Americanized. If you are looking for a taste of the Old World within the streets of the Big Apple, there are still a few places that serve classic Hungarian dishes like goulash and paprikash. - Andre's Cafe offers a variety of Hungarian baked goods and traditional dishes like goulash and paprikash. Other specialties include a variety of palacsinta (Hungarian crepes) stuffed with various sweet and savory fillings like mushrooms, pepper stew or smoked ham. Cured meats, strudels, stuffed cabbage, and noodles with farmer's cheese also are offered. Credits cards are accepted, but diners must spend more than $20.
