How to Sew a Square Table Cover That Doesn't Drag on the Floor
- 1). Measure the width of the table top. Measure the length of the table top. Determine the desired drop measurement of the table cover. This is where the table cover will extend. Mark with a piece of tape or a sticky note on the table leg. Do not push down as the adhesive may remove the table's stain. Lightly stick the edge in place. Measure from the table top edge to the desired mark. Add 1 inch to this measurement to allow for seam allowance. Add the measurement of the length of the table top to the drop measurement. This is the length of the table cover. Add the measurement of the width of the table top to the drop measurement. This is width of the table cover.
- 2). Make a pattern from pattern paper, an old sheet or an old table cover that can be cut. Use the measurements taken to measure the square. Cut the pattern piece and place it on the table. If ever in doubt, cut it longer and trim later. Verify that the pattern piece is straight and stops where desired. Trim if necessary.
- 3). Position the fabric on top of the table. Two pieces of fabric may need to be sewn together to achieve the necessary width. If this is the case, sew these now using a ½-inch seam allowance.
- 4). Place the fabric on a flat surface and place the pattern piece on top. Pin in place. Cut the fabric and remove pattern.
- 5). Fold all raw edges under ½-inch and pin. Sew the hem, using a straight stitch. Place it on the table to verify accuracy of the desired length of the table cover. Iron the hem to set stitches and finish crisply.
