Every year over 5 million visitors flock to Chiang Mai.
Unlike areas such as Phuket and Koh Samui, Chiang Mai does not have beaches.
However, whilst this may put off some tourists there are many others who come this city for the many other things it has to offer.
Scenery Chiang Mai is absolutely beautiful.
It is a city literally encircled by a vast mountain range.
The lush vegetation is tropical and a result of the warm tropical climate of Northern Thailand.
Whilst the best time to visit is during December and February when the temperature becomes less oppressive the scenery itself is exquisite regardless of the time of year.
For photography enthusiasts the city makes the perfect setting.
Old Buddhist temples framed by sunlight against a backdrop of tropical rainforests are really a sight to behold, and something that should be seen firsthand.
Shopping Thailand is especially famous for its shopping.
When you think of Bangkok often the first image is a crowded marketplace with tourists haggling over the price of imitation handbags.
Whilst this is indeed one end of the experiences of shopping in Thailand, there is much more to shopping in Chiang Mai.
Whilst tourists flock from countries like the UK and the US to shop in the bazaars of Thailand the modernization of the retail industry in Thailand has been ongoing.
If you want a more westernized style of shopping in Thailand, Chiang Mai has exactly what you need.
Culture The area is also famous for its culture.
Hundreds of old Buddhist temples are located in the area.
These temples are especially interesting as they reflect the proximity of the city to the surrounding countries of Burma and Cambodia.
The oldest dates back to the thirteenth century and therefore should be explored.
History The city was founded in 1296 and as such has an extremely rich tapestry of history including a number of invasions from neighboring countries.
It is also an extremely old trading hub for Northern Thailand and for this reason a number of notable industries such as silk have grown up in this area of Thailand.
It is quite fascinating to see the silk industry up close.
The People Thai people are one of the friendliest people you will find.
They welcome visitors with open arms and it is for this reason that holidaymakers return year after year to Thailand.
The Food It would not be possible to mention why people should come to this beautiful city without paying attention to the area's cuisine.
Khan Toke is a traditional meal including crispy fried pork skins, chili sauce and sticky rice.
